The Step by Step Guide to Your First Day of Swim Lessons

So, you have enrolled your child (or yourself!) into a swim class, now what?  Great question! Below you will find a step-by-step guide to your very first day of Swim Classes at Miller Swim School! Your Miller Family has worked tirelessly to ensure you are entering into a pristine facility – brand new CLEAN water in the pool, highly sanitized lobby, observation rooms, chairs, front desk, pool deck, and restrooms. We are excited to have you in the pool with us!

  1. Login to your Parent Portal:
  • You have already registered and paid for swim class. Next, we ask that you login to the Parent Portal (which you can access via our website here) and read through and agree to the online Waiver. It is imperative that this is completed before your first class!
  1. Prepare your Swimmer:
  • Please bring the swimmer dressed and prepared to get directly into the water
(in their swimsuit) with hair pulled back away from their face. If goggles are already regularly used, bring those along too. Goggles are not required for lessons, and we typically prefer swimmers to begin without them. Swimmers who are not potty trained must also come prepared to wear a reusable, machine washable swim diaper.
  • If you are swimming with your little one, we recommend you arrive dressed and ready to go get in the pool. We do, however, have changing rooms/stations, restrooms, and showers you may utilize prior to and after class. You will be able to leave your towels and shoes on the pool deck in the infant/toddler station.
  1. Know Where to Go:
  • Herbie has posted signs all around the building in case you lose your way!
  • Each shift has a deck supervisor who will check you in and direct the swimmer to their station. At this point, parents, you may drop your swimmer off at the front glass door and head to one of our observation rooms to watch the class.
  • The Front Desk Staff can then direct you to one of our observation rooms. Please make sure to utilize the restrooms before coming to lessons.
  1. During Class:
  • Sit back and watch as your swimmer works through our infamous 10 step progression, getting more acclimated to the water each time. Take pictures and videos to track progress over the coming weeks and share with loved ones who are unable to watch during class time.
  • Be patient and encouraging. Many of these sensations and skills may be new and frightening for some swimmers. Remember that we can see you through the glass – an occasional thumbs-up can go a long way when a nervous swimmer attempts their first skills! Please be patient with us- repetition is key in this kind of learning. Repeating the same skills may appear redundant, but is vital in creating muscle memory and confidence!
  • Rest assured our water is as clean as it comes! Our chlorinated, balanced water has been cleared by the Health Department (as always!). We are also one of the only facilities in the state of Oklahoma that has a state-of-the-art filtration and UV system that kills 99.9% of viruses and bacteria on contact.
  1. After Class:
  • At our TULSA location, swimmers may be picked up in the locker rooms and taken directly out of either exit.
  • At our JENKS location, swimmers may be picked up in the locker room. The instructors will meet each parent there with their swimmers. Feel free to change/shower or simply exit through the front doors at this time.
  • Have questions or concerns? Feel free to stop by and chat with the deck supervisor or the supervisor at the front door, who would be more than happy to answer any questions or address any concerns you might have after the lesson!
  1. Practice, Practice, Practice:
  • Utilize the homework suggestions page on our website for activities that may be done in or out of the water to help strengthen Level specific skills!
  • Still, have questions? Feel free to contact us at any time via email, sarah@millerswimschool.com, or give us a call during our business hours at 918-254-1988. We look forward to seeing our swimmers in their classes each week!
