Why it matters
Drowning remains one of the leading causes of accidental injury death among children. Parents deserve better than open-ended lessons and vague progress. They deserve to know when their child is truly safer.
The S.A.F.E.R. Swimmer Promise delivers that clarity. A clear path. A realistic timeline. A committed plan to mastering the 10 skills that save lives. And it is the only national swim program supported by the National Drowning Prevention Alliance, the leading authority in water safety. When the NDPA stands behind a promise, families know they can trust it.

What Happens at Each Level?
Frequently Asked Questions
-
When does the one-year timeline begin?
The S.A.F.E.R. Swimmer Promise begins when a swimmer age 4+ enters a qualifying level (Beginner 2–4) and attends their first lesson in that level.
-
What happens if my child misses lessons?
To stay eligible, swimmers must attend weekly lessons with no more than 4 total absences during the 12-month period (excluding facility closures). Missed classes must be made up within 2 weeks of the absence.
-
How do we request the extra lessons if needed?
If a swimmer reaches the one-year mark and hasn’t passed the S.A.F.E.R. Swimmer Test, our team will proactively discuss next steps. If eligible, your swimmer will be enrolled in up to 2 additional months of free lessons or until they pass, whichever comes first.
-
What are the passing criteria?
To pass the test, swimmers must demonstrate all 10 S.A.F.E.R. skills confidently and safely. These include entries, floating, rolling to breathe, backstroke, sighting the wall, and safe exit. Your instructor will let you know when your swimmer is preparing for the assessment.
-
What if my child moves to a different level before the year is over?
The S.A.F.E.R. Swimmer Promise continues as long as your swimmer remains in Beginner 2, 3, or 4. If they move beyond those levels before the one-year period ends, congratulations! That means they’ve already mastered the required skills!
-
What if we take a break or pause lessons?
Learning to swim safely takes regular practice. Long breaks can slow down a child’s progress and make it harder to retain the skills they’ve worked hard to build.
To stay eligible for the S.A.F.E.R. Swimmer Promise, swimmers must attend weekly lessons with no more than 4 absences in a 12-month period (not including facility closures). In addition, if a swimmer pauses lessons for more than 14 consecutive days, their Promise timeline will restart when they return.
If you’re considering a break or need to pause lessons, please speak with your front desk team so we can talk through your options and help you stay on track.

For children ages 4+ in Beginner 2–4 group classes at participating locations. If a swimmer doesn’t pass the S.A.F.E.R. Swimmer Test within one year of consistent weekly attendance (no more than 4 absences), they’ll receive up to 2 months of free lessons or until they pass, whichever comes first. Make-up lessons must be completed within 2 weeks of an absence to stay eligible. A break in enrollment longer than 14 consecutive calendar days is considered a drop, and the student’s S.A.F.E.R. Swimmer Promise timeline will reset upon return.
